Who We Are
General Contractors
Residential and Commercial
Our founders and employees come together with a common desire to build beautiful, comfortable and innovative homes that our clients will enjoy for years to come. We believe good construction relies on well thought-out practices from the early stages of site preparation to the final touches. With an awareness of time-honored, current and emerging technologies, we hope our buildings will be considered classics of comfortable living.
Over the span of his 35-year career, Mike has overseen a wide variety of challenging projects—from homes perched on cliffs to underground construction in the sand dunes of San Francisco. His tenacious passion for finding elegant solutions to complex building puzzles, along with his proficiency for oversight and quality control, has led to the successful completion of hundreds of projects.
Before he turned his hand to building, Mike grew up in the East Bay, studied philosophy at Cal in the 1960s, and then taught in the Albany school system for nine years. He was active in East Bay politics and government from the ‘60s through the ‘80s, and was a founding member of the Greenbelt Alliance.
In the mid-1990s, Mike moved from Oakland to Napa, where he and his wife Jean operate and live on an urban farm downtown. Apparently, he was born to be a builder, because he spends much of his spare time working with his hands on countless projects on their property.
A partner since 2011, Lucy has been a key part of Gleason & Tankard for twenty years. She holds a contractor’s license and a green builder’s certificate, and monitors the company’s efforts to follow, and continually improve upon, responsible building practices.
Lucy manages communications, estimating, budget tracking, project management and contract management. She maintains close connections with clients, architects and subcontractors, and is especially proud of the versatile project management and budget-tracking systems she and the team have developed that allow for transparent numbers and plain-spoken, honest communication.
Lucy grew up in Northern Minnesota. She studied philosophy and languages at the University of Minnesota before working as a fundraiser in New York City, and sailing the Caribbean and across the Atlantic.
Bob runs Gleason and Tankard’s cabinet shop operations and oversees finish carpentry. He hand-builds our cabinets—from kitchens and vanities to custom desks and other built-ins. In thirty years of construction problem solving, he has developed the eye of an artist and the habits of a perfectionist.
Whether he’s making cabinets, brewing beer, keeping bees, gardening, or throwing pots on his wheel, Bob is creating something with his hands. In fact, we chose a photo of his hands as the Gleason & Tankard logo because the strength and skill he possesses represents the best of what we aspire to as a company.
Bob studied art with an emphasis on ceramics at Connecticut College, and then started Gleason & Tankard with Mike in 1986.
